The Essence of Invention: Musings on Medicine, Creativity and the Milieu of Invention

Like me, are you curious about innovation, ideas, invention and the people who pioneer such things? After extensive research I discovered that only 5% of a group of physicians invented and brought to market the medical devices that save lives and make procedures safer. As an interventional radiologist and successful inventor myself I am on a quest to explore how we can support and nurture more invention.

This BLOG is designed for idea exchange and conversations that are organic and fluid on this topic and many others. You and your ideas will become part of the fabric and energy of the content. To FOLLOW just fill out the form below.

Throughout my life I have wondered, puzzled, explored, tinkered, questioned, and built a career in medicine. (More about me here) When I’m not treating patients or teaching and mentoring fellow interventional radiologists, I love to race cars, whether it be on tarmac or on ice, in my free time. I read a wide variety of topics from physics and nonfiction to fiction. Many years ago I was inspired to write a book. One motivation for writing my book and sharing the stories of inventors and invention itself, was to plant a seed for nurturing and recruiting individuals who will change the course of medicine and medical devices.

Whether you’re a lay person outside of the medical field who is simply curious about where ideas and medical devices come from or a college student hoping to enter medicine, biomedical engineering, or the applied sciences, our conversations will be engaging and eye-opening. Perhaps you’re an undergraduate who will join in on the conversations and consider a future that you might not have previously envisioned.

My hope is to encourage young inventors to envision taking “the road less traveled.” But let’s be clear, there’s no age limit on inventiveness. Inventive people are creative though out their lives, just as funny people are funny throughout their lives. What might YOU invent after joining our community?
